Algeria Telecom, the leading telecommunication company in North Africa, awarded FiberHome, a well-known China ICT solution provider in world, a series of FTTx and ODN product procurement contracts with amount exceeding US$200 million in march 2024. FiberHome will supply Algeria Telecom with full sets of FTTx access products and solutions in the next 5 years, including GPON/XGSPON OLT, Wi-Fi 6 ONT, ODN passive equipment and Drop Cables.
Algeria borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the vast Sahara Desert to the south. Its land area ranks the first among all African countries, as well as among Mediterranean countries and Arab countries. With the vigorous digital revolution in Africa, the speed and quality of Algeria's previous copper wired access network can no longer meet the needs of people and enterprises for Internet connections. For this reason, the Algerian Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) has proposed a national broadband speed-up strategy to benefit all households from high-quality and high-performance networks, of which the deployment of FTTx optical access networks is the top priority. Since 2019, FiberHome has participated in the construction of Algeria's broadband network, helping Algeria's telecom access network to migrate from copper to fiber, and realize the gradual transformation from MSAN to FTTx GPON.
In January 2023, FiberHome implemented Algeria's first pure optical access network in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, a small town deep in the Sahara Desert. In November of the same year, Algeria Telecom achieved access to its 1 millionth FTTx user in CHLEF province, the region where FiberHome is responsible for the access network construction. At this point, Algeria's FTTx users have grown exponentially from 53,000+ households in 2020 to 478,000+ households at the end of 2022, and to reach more than 1.08 million households by the end of 2023. Algeria has become the first country in North Africa region and the second in Africa continent to reach the threshold of one million FTTx subscribers.
